Antón Álvarez
(Suecia, 1980)
Oscillating between expression and constraint, and advancing technological innovation while utilising traditional craftsmanship, Álvarez's sculptural forms defy our perception of weight and gravity and seem at once of this world and totally separate from it. His practice focuses on designing systems and creating tools and processes to produce sculptural objects and architecture. The technology created by the artist to assist in the creation of the works is inextricable from the artist's work, and even from himself. They highlight the way in which an artist can become both craftsman and engineer, and the tension between these two roles. Álvarez continues to play with boundaries, creating works that are rich in tradition and at the same time totally unconventional to create a truly unique and surprising sculptural environment.
