Francisco Mendes Moreira
(Portugal, 1984)
In recent years, Moreira has gained a large following both online and through international exhibitions in North America, Europe and Australia.
Initially, Moreira's practice is a form of problem solving that relies on an intuitive working process that can be triggered by contemporary culture that supports both psychological and political aspects. His series are predominantly made with oil pastels, painted on found and glued cardboard containers. Moving from realism to abstraction, Moreira's images raise those eternal questions: where did we come from, what preceded us, and who else is out there?
The different media and surfaces, the number of subjects and even the scale are all circumstantial, in the sense that it is their everyday lives that determine the processes of the study.
The act of analysis has little space in the specific creative process, but by observing the artist's work one can conclude that Moreira's practice is a continuous commentary and staging of events related to the human condition.
