Joel Bigaignon
(Mauricio, 1968)
Joël Bigaignon's art blends unconventional materials and techniques, creating a dynamic interplay between control and spontaneity. Born in Mauritius and influenced by his African, Indian, and European heritage, Bigaignon moved to France at age 10, where he began his artistic journey through modern dance, which later shaped his visual art. His multicultural background permeates his work, addressing complex themes of colonialism, displacement, and identity through collage, inspired by the historical isolation of Mauritian houses. Now based in Copenhagen, Bigaignon has gained international acclaim for his art, enriched by his prior experience as a graphic designer and art director in advertising.
