Kongkee, a.k.a. KONG Khong-chang, (b. 1977, Chinese, born Malaysia, raised in Hong Kong) is an animation director and visual artist. He was the founder of studio Penguin Lab since 2008.
he is currently based in London. Often described as “Psychedelic Futurism” and “Cyberpunk”, the artist’s works reflect relationships between beings and the environment in his unique aesthetic. Alongside with the explicit use of dramatic color scheme which was iconic in the older generations of local Hong Kong design, cultural symbols of the city are also heavily introduced in the artist's oeuvre in a surrealistic manner. In 2015, Kongkee collaborated with Britpop band Blur and created comic book Travel to Hong Kong with Blur. His works have been featured in numerous film festivals; his short film Dragon’s Delusion received the Grand Prize at DigiCon6 ASIA Awards (2020). Kongkee’s recent commissioned work, Flower in the Mirror, an animation video installation, was on view at the M+ museum’s grand opening. The artist’s solo exhibition “Warring States Cyberpunk — the Cyber Citrus Fizz” debuted at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and toured to private art institution Wrightwood 659 in Chicago.
