Laura Lagraña (aka Culitomatón)
(Spain, 1995)
Born in Barcelona in 1995, she currently resides in Bilbao, Biscay. She studied Higher Degrees in Illustration, Ceramics, and Sculpture at the IAE Pau Gargallo in Badalona.
If the world is gray, fast-paced, and stumbling, it can also be fun and absurdly colorful. This could be one of the premises confirmed by the sculptures and illustrations of Culitomatón. Like a child trying to draw you into that provisional world governed by its own rules of the game, the author's ceramics entice us to enter her sensitive realm.
Her creative process begins with drawing, to channel the flow of ideas, thoughts, and references. Then, those drawings begin to develop their own autonomy through color, identification, or relationships with other drawings. The ceramic process comes last, driven by the need for materialization (seeing the character's back, giving them a belly button...), and here a series of translations unfold through glaze and the materiality itself, distancing the work from that initial drawing.
