Xiaomo Shih
(Taiwan,1972)
Shih Xiao-mo, born in 1972 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and currently residing in Taipei, is a contemporary artist who has long focused on creating large-scale abstract paintings with thematic content. She excels in expressing linear dynamics and the reshaping of multiple structures from an interdisciplinary scientific perspective. Her creations deeply explore themes related to philosophy, psychology, sociology, science, medicine, and geology. Shih Xiao-mo is an artist actively engaged in both creation and academic research. The exploration of human "consciousness" has been a significant theme deeply rooted in her work over the years. Her interdisciplinary artistic perspective, guided by Professor Wu Ma-li, continues to focus on social observation and the aesthetics of the Anthropocene's ecosystem evolution.
Her artistic practice closely connects the ongoing exploration of human consciousness, social phenomena, and material culture. The early stages of her work establish a clear and philosophically rich structural space, building a unique vocabulary for her themes. Her artistic form integrates meticulous observation and reflective thinking, supported and inspired by theoretical literature. Centering her work on contemporary issues, she engages in in-depth discussions across various fields, including philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, geology, and ecology. These academic studies provide the inspiration and theoretical foundation for her work, making her creations not merely an artistic presentation but each stroke carrying a profound analysis of the issues, aiming to reflect on the multiple and complex paths of human social behavior. She skillfully organizes the visual aesthetics, desires, and even creates an insightful thinking for the viewers through the structured beauty of her works, laying out a meticulous sense of ritual in reading her works. Hence, in her paintings, installations, photography, and video works, she conveys rigorous rational concepts through a sensually playful dynamic linearity, filling her works with a virtual monologue space and situational tension.
